2011 Mercedes R Class


Mercedes will introduce the facelift version 2011 Mercedes R Class at this week's New York International Auto Show.

With the new version 2011 Mercedes R Class, Daimler is hoping to boost sales in this segment, and even though nothing major has been changed at the inside, the exterior however got a fresh new appearance that actually looks pretty good. Besides the larger front bonnet, the 2011 Mercedes R Class has also received redesigned spoilers with LEDs at the front, new headlights that reassemble to ones on the ML plus revamped taillights.

Powering options for the 2011 Mercedes R Class will include a petrol V6 that produces 268 HP and a 3.0-litre Diesel packing 210 HP.

The 2011 Mercedes R Class price will be announced as the market launch date is getting closer, while more technical details should become public as the NYIAS will open its doors.




BMW to Go Front-Wheel Drive

BMW will end its tradition of rear- and four-wheel-drive only vehicles with a front-wheel drive small car meant to rival the Audi A1.


BMW chairman Norbert Reithofer has confirmed that the German carmaker will introduce a new front-wheel-drive entry-level model positioned and priced below the existing 1-Series as part of plans to help increase part sharing and to bolster the potential for production savings between the BMW and MINI brands, thus bringing an end to the era of rear- and four-wheel-drive-only BMW models.

Speaking to AutoWeek at the Geneva Motor Show, Reithofer said internal BMW studies revealed that despite the downturn in the world's economy, there was continued demand for what he described as "premium vehicles" in the small-car class, before officially acknowledging plans that will see BMW produce a rival to the recently unveiled Audi A1 and a new smart forfour presently under development at Mercedes-Benz.

"We will be extending the BMW and MINI brands into the small-car segment with new models and variants," he said.

Reithofer reconfirmed the plans for front-drive BMWs on Wednesday during the automaker's annual shareholder meeting in Munich.

Being careful to separate the new price-leading front-drive model from BMW's upcoming city car, which is being developed in a different project as part of its Mega City Vehicle electric-car initiative, Reithofer added, "For these new vehicles [the new BMW and MINI] we [are] developing a common architecture for both front- and four-wheel drive."

While exact details remain shrouded in secrecy, AutoWeek can confirm the new entry-level BMW has been conceived to run the same front-drive underpinnings as the next-generation MINI Cooper.

But while the new MINI Cooper isn't due out until 2014, indications are that the small BMW could be on sale as early as 2013 as part of a major thrust by the company to become the undisputed sales leader in the premium small-car class.

News of plans to base the new entry-level BMW on the same platform as the MINI Cooper also raises the question of where the new car would be produced. Although BMW is being vague, indications are it could be built alongside the MINI Cooper in Oxford, England, using a new generation of three- and four-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines sourced from BMW's British-based engine factory in Hams Hall.

AutoWeek understands that studies are also under way that could see the new platform structure referred to by Reithofer used for future generations of the 1-Series, although at this stage, BMW is undecided on whether the third-generation model due out in 2018 will be front-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive.

"We are looking at alternatives," a Munich insider told AutoWeek. "With the new platform set to support four-wheel drive, it wouldn't be that hard to use the transmission tunnel for a rear-wheel-drive application."

The Future of Lamborghini: More Carbon Fiber, Greater Efficiency, No Forced Induction—and No Manuals?

At the recent launch of the Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera , we sat down with Maurizio Reggiani, the director of research and development at the extroverted supercar maker, to get a read on what to expect from Sant’Agata Bolognese over the next few years. First off, it’s worth noting that the company reorganized its priorities in 2007. Prior to that, they were design, top speed, acceleration, and handling—in that order.

But now, citing the fact that there’s really nowhere to explore its cars’ 200-mph-plus speeds, handling and top speed have switched places, so the order looks like this: 1. Design 2. Handling 3. Acceleration 4. Top Speed You’ll notice that fuel economy didn’t make the top four, but it will be a major focus for the company over the next five years (and probably longer). After all, 550-plus-hp cars and stricter fuel-efficiency regulations don’t tend to jibe very well. In Europe, Lamborghini has special dispensation as a small automaker to reduce its cars’ CO2 output by 35 percent between 2007 and 2015, rather than meet dramatically stricter regulations in place for larger manufacturers.

For the U.S., Reggiani tells us that’s it’s still up to the EPA to decide whether Lamborghini will have to meet fuel-economy hurdles as an individual company, or whether it will be held to one overall figure based on an average of all the VW Group brands sold here. Twenty percent of the total 35-percent reduction in CO2 mentioned has already been achieved, largely due to fitting direct injection to the Gallardo’s V-10 when the LP560-4 model was launched. But the next 15 percent is much harder, says Reggiani. Further gains will come from additional increases in engine efficiency, such as friction reduction, and plan on direct injection appearing on the company’s V-12 when the Murciélago replacement launches. (That should happen in the next 12 to 18 months.) Lamborghini is somewhat surprisingly working on far more mainstream technologies, too, such as stop/start capability to thrift fuel in urban settings, cylinder deactivation—so that both the V-10 and the V-12 can operate on half as many cylinders—E85 compatibility, and possibly even a mild-hybrid solution.

Against the pervasive trend in the industry, Reggiani says that there are no plans for forced induction at this point. Although that certainly is one way to reduce emissions, he says the company simply isn’t willing to sacrifice either engine’s fabulous linearity or their awe-inspiring wail. In short, the naturally aspirated V-10 and V-12 will continue. Weight-Loss Strategy to Include More Carbon Fiber Reggiani says Lambo is determined to offset any weight gains, particularly from a hybrid system, by reductions elsewhere in the car. Future cars “have to be lighter,” he says. To that end, he believes carbon fiber will be the major enabler of the weight-reduction goal, as witnessed by Lamborghini’s recent collaboration with the University of Washington and Boeing to create the ACSL, or Automobili Lamborghini Composite Structures Laboratory.

The purpose of the lab is to leverage the aerospace industry’s extensive carbon-fiber experience to find even more efficient ways to use it in automobiles. Reggiani cites studies predicting that the cost of carbon fiber will decline significantly by the 2012–2014 timeframe, at which point it’s predicted to be no more expensive than aluminum. By then, he wants to have come up with more creative ways of using the stuff, as its material properties, unlike those of aluminum, can be changed dramatically based on construction and shape. How about getting rid of all-wheel drive as a weight reducer? Not likely. “You have to put the power to the ground,” Reggiani says, “and when the tires are a-spinning all the time, you lose out on acceleration.” (See company priority No. 3). Certainly all-wheel drive is a major enabler of blistering standing-start acceleration, which is how the Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera is predicted to hurl to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds. Plus, Lamborghini prefers four-wheel traction for racetrack situations, too, where it certainly makes its cars more goof-proof and easier to safely exploit, although we generally prefer hairier rear-drivers on-track. Et Tu, Lamborghini? We pointed out that Lambo’s Italian neighbors, Ferrari, have basically abandoned the use of manual transmissions, and Reggiani concedes that Lamborghini likely will eventually follow suit; he says manual transmissions are fitted to less than five percent of the firm’s cars.

Although he’s still somewhat defensive about the common belief that dual-clutch automated manuals with seven speeds or more—such as Porsche’s PDK—are necessarily better than Lambo’s six-speed single-clutch unit. He says Lamborghini is opposed to unequal gear steps, such as Porsche’s thrifty and ultra-tall seventh ratio, and also makes note that the Porsche gearbox is roughly 50 pounds heavier than the Lambo six-speed. But we tend to side with Porsche on this one—use gears one through six for acceleration, and reserve seventh as purely for fuel economy. Lamborghinis with cylinder deactivation, the exclusive use of automatics, and stop/start functionality? If anything, this proves that the automotive future will be anything but business as usual. 2011 Hennessey Venom GT official specifications


As we promised a few days ago, we now have official information and pictures of what is sure to be the worlds maddest supercar. Or really, we should say hypercar because this ballistic missile for the road will storm from 0-100km/h in a mind boggling 2.4-seconds.

Yes, thats quicker than the ridiculously quick Bugatti Veyron we drove two years ago. The Hennessey Venom GT is also faster, with a top speed of 437km/h, but were told this is an estimate. Good luck to the test driver who has to verify it, though because the Lotus Elise-based Venom GT only weighs 1100kg, which means it needs dollops of downforce to keep it from taking off.



Thats why this cars aero-package has been completely reworked from the original Elise. Also adding to the insaneness, is the engine. Were talking a 6.2-litre, twin-turbocharged V8 making a ridiculous 900kW and running through s Ricardo six-speed manual to the rear wheels. Oh, and a stupendous 1350Nm. All in an 1100kg chassis. Yes, were shaking our heads, too. But that doesnt stop us wanting to drive it


As with the Veyron, Michelin has come to the party, supplying PS2 tyres for its carbon-fibre wheels. Brembo brakes are used, with six-pot fronts and four-pot rears, along with a programmable traction control system, which youre going to need.




There are three variants available, the base model coming with the LS9 engine from the Corvette ZR1, and reworked to put out 540kW. You can opt to upgrade to the 750kW twin-turbo model, or splash out the cash on the 900kW motion-sickness-inducing model. The pricing will be US$600,000 for the base model and $725,000 for the top-of-the-line variant.

The good news for us is that Hennessey is looking to set up a dealer network around the world, with Australia being specifically mentioned as one of the destinations for the Venom GT.

We understand it’s a long-revered Ferrari color, nearly as hallowed as Rosso Corsa. And it looks fine on track cars; even Challenge Stradale editions are exempted because owners are passionate fans. It’s the tamer editions that become douchemobiles when owners couldn’t care less about their car’s pedigree and use the hue as an ego stroke.

No.9 - 1988-'03 Pontiac Grand Prix/1992-'05 Grand Am

Let’s face it: there’s not much shame in these Pontiacs falling to douchemobile status. Between these later Grand Prix and Grand Am cars, there was little to love anyway. When the power wasn’t anemic, it was unwieldy, yanking the wheel in torque steer. All this and Batmobile bodywork channeling a typical sixth-grader’s notebook sketches make up the academic apex of the typical douche piloting these cars. If you encounter men who drive these models, speak slowly and limit your syllables.

No.8 - 1994-'04 Ford Mustang in (faded) red or (faded) black

Relax, we’re not about to throw the douchemobile label on the 2005-2011 Mustangs. The newest cars are arguably the best, at least of those since ’74. We’re talking instead about the decade-long run of the ’94-’04 cars, now dubbed Douchestangs thanks to the guys who ruined it for the rest of us. Douchey V8 drivers are bad enough, but it seems a lot of V6 owners have inexplicably bigger chips on their shoulders.

No.7 - 1993-'07 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

When Mercedes finally gave us a credible C-Class for 2007, the company also discontinued a douchemobile. The biggest problem with the W202 and W203, like most of the other cars here, is the typical owner. If they wanted a great near-luxury German sedan, they could’ve shopped Audi or BMW. Instead, they bought a catalyst for their attitude, as if having the Baby Benz granted S-Class cachet to the douchiest of them.

No.6 - 1995-'05 Dodge Avenger/Stratus Coupe

Low-tech meets low-brow. As the lackluster successor to the equally dull Dodge Daytona, bland had a brand as the Dodge Avenger Coupe and then Stratus Coupe. Its style was instantly forgettable and available engines never oozed more than 200 horsepower, yet the douches who drive them even today want you to believe they’re packing twice that. Their only kill-shot comes from occasional stoplight races with lawn tractors. Even then, it’s close.

Porsches are all about the simple pleasure of driving. Even the Cayenne cheats physics and performs admirably on- and off-road, and some are well-driven and enjoyed. Too many Cayennes suffer their lives as suburban douche mobiles, with douchey owners who misuse them as status symbols and never explore the limits. They do talk a good game, though, blathering at length about stats and capabilities. Of course, it’s all culled from the sales brochure, not firsthand experience.

Douchemobile status is virtually assured when your car is not only pimped by cartoon characters (Tasmanian Devil), but comes in NASCAR editions too (Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Jr., Tony Stewart). It takes big, sleeveless shoulders to carry such a dubious honor, but the last-generation Monte Carlo manages that there real good. The slab-sided coupe was embarrassingly crude on its own, but when some fell into the hands of race-delusional douches, it became a joke that wrote its own punch line.

But that’s the problem. You can’t ignore all that. Maybe that’s partly why some hybrid believers choose other hybrids.

the ones who look like Jersey Shore rejects. When their idea of the Lamborghini experience is retina-burning paint and trying too hard to be seen, they find themselves driving six-figure douchemobiles.

Buying Your First Used Sailboat, Trawler or Motor Yacht



If you’re a first-time yacht buyer the selection of previously used boats available for purchase can be irresistible. How do you make sense of all the different models and styles out there?

The first time boat buyer needs to avoid purchasing on emotion and take a hard look at what they want to do with the vessel. Making the wrong choice will be a big problem in the long run and perhaps cost you thousands.

To begin with, are you a sailor or a motor boater or maybe you don’t truly know? Many like the story of a sailboat in the islands; others don’t want the aggravation of the sails, appurtenances etc. But a sailboat is very inexpensive to run if your plans include sailing to far-away places

Once you have assessed your yacht preferences you can then decide on what you wish on doing with it.

How will you use your new yacht? I always say that there are “sincere boaters” and just “owners”. Actual boaters use their boats; boat owners just like to say they own one as their yachts rarely depart the wharf. Many boaters may be full-time liveaboards using their boats as their housing every day. Others may just use their boats on nice weekends when time permits.

Next is the cost of watercraft ownership. You must take this into consideration. The initial purchase is like a down payment. Boating has its costs that you need to be aware of. If you are mechanically inclined, you will find that the costs are not out of line. Most watercraft owners do the majority of repair themselves. So thus far we have determined what type of boater you are, we know what style of cruiser mostly appeals to you, we know how much we expect to use it and about what to expect in the maintenance of her.

Now comes the hard piece; how do you select just the right one? I have developed a purchase checklist that I use with my customers to let them choose the critical features of their desired boat. That checklist then becomes the basis for the perfect boat hunt. When I am dealing with customers, I then look for yachts that best fill the customer’s wants recognizing that most purchases usually involve compromise. Rarely do I find a cruiser with all of the desirable features.

In the planning stage, I always say that you’ll know it when the right vessel comes along; it will “talk” to you. Any potential boat will have the lines, the feel and the personality that appeals to you. Don’t settle for anything less than one that pleases you.

But what about the cost of that used boat? How do you know you are getting a fair transaction? Borrowing from other posting at the Paradise Yachts website about the True Value of Yachts, good yachts always command higher prices, always! A newer boat in bad condition will bring less than an older vessel in good condition, always! Never buy a boat based upon the initial price alone or you’ll be selling it within 6 months.

And should you a survey, yes it’s always advisable. Select a knowledgeable surveyor that has experience with your desirable yacht . Ask him for references too.

If you are working with a respectable Yachts Broker, he will recommend various top-shelf surveyors but will insist you choose the one you want to use.

And finally, use a Buyer’s Broker to represent you in your hunt , selection and purchase. It will save you lots of time, money and a lot of disappointment.

Crown Hybrid in Japan

Toyota unveiled a hybrid version of its Crown sedan, its flagship luxury series in Japan. The Lexus brand is Toyota’s luxury “universal brand”, but the Crown series is more popular in Japan.

The Crown Hybrid will be available in Japan in May. They will be priced between 5.95 million yen and 6.19 million yen. Toyota is looking to sell around 800 a month.

“The new Crown maintains the traditional quality of trust and safety while being equipped with state-of-the-art technologies,” Toyota president Katsuaki Watanabe told reporters.

“We have customers who strongly support the Crown brand over the Lexus.” The Crown line was first launched in 1955 as Toyota’s flagship luxury sedan and is particularly popular in the Japanese market.

The Crown Hybrid adopts a TFT (thin film transistor) LCD Finegraphic Meter, which features excellent visibility and provides clear information to the driver. In addition to digital and analog speedometers, a hybrid system status indicator shows output and energy recovery. A color silhouette of the vehicle appears on the display when the driver enters the cabin followed by the Crown logo the moment the engine is started.

The Night View system, available in the Crown Hybrid, features the world’s first1 pedestrian detection function based on a near-infrared camera, thereby improving a driver’s visibility at night.

The rear-wheel drive THS II (Toyota Hybrid System II) with a two-stage motor speed reduction device provides the driving performance of a 4.5-liter vehicle with the low fuel consumption of a 2.0-liter vehicle to deliver powerful and smooth acceleration and exceptional environmental performance.

The combination of a high output 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine and a high-performance electric motor achieves excellent driving performance, a quiet ride, high fuel efficiency and clean emissions.

Tokyo – TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) announced today it has completely redesigned the “Crown Royal Saloon” and “Crown Athlete” series and added a hybrid model to the product lineup. The Royal Saloon and Athlete series go on sale in Japan today and the “Crown Hybrid” will be launched in Japan on May 6.

The 13th-generation Crown unveiled today retains the sense of poise and reliability that characterizes the Crown series, which has earned a reputation as the leader among luxury vehicles in Japan over the more than half a century since its debut in 1955. At the same time, the new Crown adopts advanced technologies to create luxury sedans that provide performance at the world’s highest levels.

While the hybrid version delivers outstanding cruising and environmental performance, all three series benefit from the excellent vehicle stability and preventive safety performance offered by VDIM (Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management).

Other advanced features include a Pre-crash Safety System that can determine – as a world’s first* – whether the driver’s eyes are properly open. Such features, together with an integrated navigation system, result in one of the world’s highest levels of driver support.

Cutting-Edge Technologies Enhance Safety Performance and Vehicle Stability

The Pre-crash Safety System (millimeter-wave radar type) employs an eye monitor – the first of its kind in the world – to detect whether a driver’s eyes are properly open. This function, combined with the system’s current ability to determine the direction of the driver’s face, enhances the ability to reduce collision-related damage.
All models are equipped with VDIM (Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management) to ensure excellent vehicle stability and preventive safety performance on slippery surfaces.
The Night View system, available in the Crown Hybrid, features the world’s first1 pedestrian detection function based on a near-infrared camera, thereby improving a driver’s visibility at night.
The advanced car navigation system facilitates the entering and exiting of highways. Using its road map data, the system provides smooth acceleration when merging into highway traffic from an on-ramp or a service area by controlling the timing of up-shifting, as well as increasing engine braking for smooth deceleration when exiting the highway or coming to a tollbooth.
The system also uses the map data to inform the driver of upcoming stop signs and issue a warning if the driver is late in decelerating. The world’s first1 navigation system-linked brake assist function assists the driver in the event of emergency braking, helping reduce vehicle speed.
The Intelligent Parking Assist system helps the driver during parallel parking or backing into a parking space, using ultrasonic sensors installed on the front of the vehicle to detect the parking parameters. The system has a function that tells the driver when to turn the steering wheel and where to start backing up.
The Emergency Braking Signal system, standard on all models, warns vehicles behind when the brakes are suddenly depressed by flashing all of the brake lights.
Ten SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) airbags are standard on all models. Rear left and right side air bags also alleviate the impact in the event of a side-on collision.
The front-seat structures are based on the WIL (Whiplash Injury Lessening) concept. Both the driver and front passenger seats incorporate an Active Headrest2 that shifts to an appropriate position to lessen stress on the neck and reduce the risk of whiplash injuries sustained during a rear-end collision.
The GOA (Global Outstanding Assessment) construction has been further evolved to create an advanced collision-safety body structure.
Improvements in the body structure also reduce the likelihood of pedestrian head injuries to achieve one of the highest levels of injury prevention in the vehicle’s class.

The rear-wheel drive THS II (Toyota Hybrid System II) with a two-stage motor speed reduction device provides the driving performance of a 4.5-liter vehicle with the low fuel consumption of a 2.0-liter vehicle to deliver powerful and smooth acceleration and exceptional environmental performance.
The combination of a high output 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine and a high-performance electric motor achieves excellent driving performance, a quiet ride, high fuel efficiency and clean emissions.
The electric vehicle (EV) driving mode permits the driver, simply by pressing a button, to operate the vehicle using the electric motor only, for quiet operation early in the morning or late at night and lower emissions.
The Active Noise Control function uses the speakers to cancel out engine booming noise (low-frequency engine noise) and provide an even quieter ride.

Crown Royal Saloon & Crown Athlete

The Crown Royal Saloon series features a V6 3.0-liter and a V6 2.5-liter engine, while the Crown Athlete series offers a V6 3.5-liter and a V6 2.5-liter engine. All engines are combined with 6 Super ECT (Super Intelligent Electronically-controlled, Six-speed Automatic Transmission) and DRAMS (Driving Response and Acceleration Management System) for smooth and powerful driving.
The 3.5-liter engine is a D-4S (direct injection four-stroke gasoline engine, superior version), while the 3.0-liter and 2.5-liter engines are stoichiometric D-4 engines. All engines employ Dual VVT-i (Dual Variable Valve Timing-intelligent) to optimize intake and exhaust valve timing according to driving conditions.

Outstanding Environmental Performance

Efforts were made to improve fuel efficiency to reduce CO2 emissions. The Crown Hybrid achieves a fuel efficiency of 14.0 km/l according to the newly introduced JC08 test cycle outlined by the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MLIT) and it is one of the first vehicles to meet the new 2015 Japanese fuel efficiency standards1. The vehicle also achieves the equivalent of 166g/km of CO2 emissions. (Under the traditional 10-15 test cycle, the fuel efficiency is 15.8km/l, surpassing the existing 2010 fuel efficiency standards by 20%, with CO2 emissions just 147g/km.)
The Crown Royal Saloon and the Crown Athlete both achieve fuel efficiency of 12.0km/l according to the 10-15 test cycle2, with CO2 emissions of 193g/km, which surpasses the level called for by the 2010 standards by 10%.
Both NOx (nitrogen oxides) and NMHC (non-methane hydrocarbons) have been reduced so that all vehicles now have emissions levels 75% below the 2005 standards under MLIT’s Approval System for Low-emission Vehicles.
Toyota employed Eco-VAS (Eco-Vehicle Assessment System), its original comprehensive environmental impact assessment system, to efficiently reduce overall environmental impact throughout the vehicle’s lifecycle, from production and use to disposal. Environmental targets were set in the initial vehicle development stage and a life cycle assessment carried out to help the vehicles achieve a reduction of CO2 and air contaminants.
The newly adopted Eco Zone Indicator displays the degree to which the accelerator is opened and the range for fuel-efficient driving. Together with the Eco Driving Indicator that lights up to indicate fuel-efficient operation, it helps raise the driver’s awareness of environmentally considerate driving.

Next BMW 'M6' to rival Audi R8

BMW’s flagship M6 performance car is unlikely to be replaced when the next 6-series arrives, autocar.co.uk has learned.

Instead, its position at the top of the range is likely to be filled by a V8 sports car drawing cues from BMW’s Vision Efficient Dynamics concept.

The 6-series has gradually evolved into a grand tourer since its 2004 introduction rather than an out and out sports car; this has led to the M6, a car aimed primarily at US buyers, sitting awkwardly within the range. So a replacement isn’t likely to appear in next year’s new 6-series line-up.

The M3 coupe-size Vision ED offers M3 performance with Toyota Prius levels of economy and CO2 emissions. A prototype ED will be running by the summer; it’s intended to be a hi-tech sports car that showcases all of BMW’s eco-tech in the packaging of a performance car.

The Vision ED concept uses an advanced diesel-electric hybrid system producing a total of 356bhp and 590lb ft. Its turbocharged three-cylinder engine could make it into the next 1 and 3-series models. But the production version of the Vision ED may get the next-gen M5’s twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8.

Using this engine will ensure the firm still offers a car with M6 levels of power and performance, but the inclusion of much of Vision ED’s eco-tech, as well as that car’s more daring styling, would allow the car to be marketed as a standalone model.

BMW R&D chief Klaus Draeger has said a future BMW supercar has to “be intelligent and dramatic-looking, something like the ED concept”.

The car would give the firm the direct rival to the Audi R8 and Porsche 911 ranges, and would also allow BMW to compete with AMG’s forthcoming baby SLS model.

McLaren MP4-12C set for battle



Up close, the 12C is much more impressive than it looks in pictures. Every tiny detail has been considered and the overall result is a car which looks fast, but also has top-drawer quality.


The grand prix rivalry between McLaren and Ferrari hits the road this year.

The British company is ready to go with its all-new MP4-12C two- seater, a car aimed directly at the Ferrari F458. But the battle will not stop there as McLaren aims for more than 4000 top-shelf sports car sales a year by 2015, all developed from the same fast-track technology base outside London that is responsible for the Formula One cars raced this weekend by Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton.

Up close, the 12C is much more impressive than it looks in pictures. Every tiny detail has been considered and the overall result is a car which looks fast, but also has top-drawer quality. It is a jewel.

The only thing missing - so far - is emotion. The twin-turbo engine guarantees 450 kiloWatts of power, a 0-100km/h sprint in less than four seconds and a top-speed of more than 300km/h, the carbonfibre monocell chassis is best in class, and there is everything from a seven-speed DSG gearbox to active aerodynamics.

"It's very difficult to create a car that feels alive at 200km/h and also at low speed. I won't lie," says Antony Sheriff, the boss of McLaren Automotive. "It does not feel as viscerally raw as some competition. But you can drive it and not feel like you've been to hell and back. It's incredibly easy to drive."

For now, I have to trust him on this stuff. The only 'outsiders' beyond the development team who have driven the 12C are Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton, and they are hardly impartial as they race for McLaren's F1 team.

But, walking through the creative process for the 12C - from the choice of its name to plans for an all-new factory in 2011 - it is impossible not to be impressed by the effort. Still, when you're spending more than $500 million...

"The success of this company is not going to be measured by how many cars we sell. The key word is exclusivity," says Sheriff. "We think we can be successful. We are a company that's debt free. All of the people in this company feel incredibly lucky and incredibly challenged."

That's why the company has still to settle on a final design for its corporate logo. It has to be absolutely right.

Frank Stephenson, the design director at McLaren, explains in minute detail the approach to styling a car which has to be a McLaren flagship, but also cut through the air at more than 300km/h. And he explains the materials for the indicator stalks, and the way the seats are shaped, and the choice of paint and leather.

Everything is new and everything has to be right. "Everything in this car is bespoke. We even had to design our own heating-ventilation system," says Sheriff, explaining that a system from another brand would have made the car an unacceptable 10 centimetres wider.

And so it goes. On and on. Visiting McLaren Automotive is a trip into a dream world where the right answer is always about excellence, not compromise or cost. The first 12Cs are already built and look good, but they are only for testing. Including the car that went through three - yes, three - front-end crash tests without even cracking the windscreen.

But why does McLaren need to build a road car? It created the massively costly F1 road car and lost money on the project, and was Mercedes-Benz's supercar partner until the marriage broke up.

"It's about launching a car company from nothing. There are a lot of good things for us to build on," says Mark Vinnels, program director. "We need a business to support Formula One, as much as anything. We will have a range of cars. It's a massive project for us."

More details will emerge from McLaren as the MP4-12C gets closer to production, including the final performance figures, specifications and pricetag. And, eventually, there will be cars to drive.

Right now, the 12C has to be taken on what you can see and hear and touch. And it's impressive, but nothing will be certain until the car is ready for a test drive. "We just have to nail it. That's an attitude that comes from Formula One. We've ended up with a car that is a McLaren and only a McLaren," says Vinnels.

The home of the MP4-12C is massively impressive. It's a $1 billion technology centre in the green belt outside London that is already home to the McLaren grand prix team and has been the production base for the Mercedes-McLaren SLR.

Things are so organised that no-one eats at their desk, and the company canteen - overlooking a giant artificial lake - has a one-way traffic flow. There is also a jaw-dropping lineup of historic McLaren racecars - every one immaculate and ready to go - that cannot be ignored as you come in the front door.

More than 200 engineers work in the development centre for the 12C project, which will also spawn two other models within two years, there is a giant 'reality wall' to check virtual development of the cars, and the assembly area is more like an operating theatre than an old-school production line.

The price for the MP4-12C will be around $450,000 when it gets to Australia. It is being set against the Ferrari F458 and will be sold through a single local dealer, although that is not a word in the McLaren vocabulary.

"We've got a revolutionary process. We're actually going to trust our partners," says Antony Sheriff."We want to create a sense of community. It doesn't matter how good the car is if you're treated badly. We're not asking them for Taj Mahals . . . but a unique investment in customer service."

McLaren has had more than 500 applications for agencies, including calls from two of the leading upscale dealer groups in Australia, Trivetts and Ateco. "We've got about five or six candidates. We'll have an appointment made in July or August," says Ian Gorsuch, who is responsible for the McLaren business in Australia.

The first cars are likely to be delivered early in 2011, but the order books will not even open until a dealer is appointed.

2010 Mitsubishi Outlander GT S-AWC

Mitsubishi's restyled 2010 Outlander, a 4-door SUV available in ES, SE, XL and GT model choices. With seating available up to seven passengers, the entry level ES 2-wheel drive starts at just $20,840, and then escalates up to the top class and all new GT S-AWC (Super All Wheel Control) the latter.

Outlander's new exterior features an impressive and attention getting huge mesh front grille with blackout bar and chrome surround, more aerodynamic touches and a host of other tweaks that makes this Mitsubishi stand out in the crowd. From the side, the front fenders look somewhat "Volvo-like," although any resemblance quickly fades thanks to Outlander's new rear fascia, touches of chrome, and integrated lightweight aluminum roof panel which shares space with a power sunroof.

The cabin upgrades are a mix of opulence and muscle, with leather wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, aluminum pedals and trim, paddle shifters, 60/40 split seats, fold under third row seating, and new instrumentation. Our tester came with one option, a $3,000 Premium Navigation and Leather Package which really takes the interior to "top line" categorization. Included in this option are a rear backup camera, 40-gig hard drive Navigation with music server and real time traffic, leather seats in the first two rows, power driver seat, heated seating, and an auxiliary video input jack.

ES and SE trim Outlanders utilize an Inline 4-cylinder engine, while the upper class XL and GT versions rely on the more powerful V6 which comes in 3.0-liter design. The "premium fuel recommended" V6 puts out 230-horsepower and dishes up 18-mpg city and 24-mpg highway while a 6-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is standard. Overall, Outlander ran very well and has more than enough in the power range, although I feel the mpg numbers may be a bit on the high side, both city and highway. In Mitsubishi's defense, however, I did do a lot of mountain and city driving during the test, which lowers overall numbers.

As for the four wheel drive system, ES, SE, and XLS models come with a center differential locking AWD, while the new GT is officially the first Outlander to use Mitsubishi's "Super-All Wheel Control" system that features electronically controlled active front differential. A choice of Tarmac (dry highway), Snow, and Lock modes can be selected with the flip of a switch on the console. Overall, and thanks to some great fully independent suspension components, Outlander is a more than capable handling vehicle that is easy to drive in any situation.

Overall, don't expect a cushion like ride, as the bumps will be felt but is in no way a negative trait for a GT model. One negative is its seven passenger classification, as any adults who have to sit in the third row will surely know the small third seat is built for pets and or small children. I do like the fold down rear tailgate, something other SUV's have disregarded and now opt for an "upward only" design. Sans the third row, there's lot of room inside for passengers.

On the safety side, 5-Star government crash ratings in both front and side impacts along with a 4-Star rollover make Outlander a top choice. Outlanders come standard with front side airbags, side curtain airbags for the first two rows, front active headrests, active stability control, rear window wiper/washer/defroster, 4-wheel anti-lock brakes, traction control, hill logic, daytime running lamps and 18-inch tires with alloy wheels on SE, XL and GT models.

All Outlanders come with a host of standard features, including air conditioning, 6-speaker AM/FM/CD Stereo, and keyless entry. Our top line GT adds steering wheel audio controls, remote start, cruise, fog lamps, automatic climate control, rain sensing wipers, heated mirrors, Xenon headlights, and a "rockin'" 710-watt Rockford Fosgate premium sound system that holds six CDs, is MP3 compatible and then adds Sirius Satellite pumped through 9-speakers and a 10-inch subwoofer! (Very impressive). Also notable is a standard FUSE hands-free link system that features voice recognition, Bluetooth, automatic phone book transfer and USB for iPod integration.

Important numbers include a wheelbase of 105.1 inches, from 36.2 to 72.6 cu. ft. of cargo space, 3,500 lb. tow capacity, 3,780 lb. curb weight, 8.5-inches of ground clearance, 15.8 gallon fuel tank, and a great 10-year, 100,000 mile powertrain warranty.

Overall, Outlander looks better, delivers reliability and convenience and is priced right. It's worth a closer look at your Mitsubishi dealer.

Volkswagen Group reveals 4 New platform



The Volkswagen Group is planning to overtake Toyota, the world’s biggest car maker, as part of a 10-year plan that will see the majority of new Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda and Seat models – possibly even some Porsches, Bentleys, Lamborghinis and Bugattis – adopt one of four mechanical platforms.



The four new model architectures are for compact rear-engined city cars (MHB), small to midsized transverse-engined family cars (MQB), mid-engined sports cars, and larger longitudinal-engined cars (MLB).



According to a report in Automotive News yesterday, those four architectures could allow the VW Group to almost double its volume by 2018, to reduce model development times by up to a year, and to reduce costs by between 25- and 40 per cent. Here’s what’s known about each of them right now.



’MHB’ to underpin smallest models



Volkswagen’s smallest new platform will form the basis of its forthcoming family of rear-engined Up! city cars but, as Autocar has learned, it will also serve underneath a new Seat city car known as the Ros, after the firm’s Arosa city car.



There is considerable scope for it also to be used to engineer a bargain basement Skoda model, given the Czech brand’s reputation for value for money. Industry experts will be keeping an eye out for a concept car at one of Europe’s motor shows next year.



As the cheapest of VW’s four platforms, it’s also likely to play an important role in the groups’ expansion into developing markets.



From Fabia to Bolero, via Audi’s new A1: ‘MQB’



VW’s next platform up will become its most ubiquitous ever. It’s codenamed ‘MQB’ and will allow VW to engineer a variety of different front, transverse-engined, front-wheel drive cars using the same starting point.


The models themselves will span several segments, varying in size from the next VW Polo and Skoda Fabia at the smaller end, up to the next VW Passat and Seat Bolero. They will differ in concept as widely as the sixth generation VW Golf and the next Audi TT, and the inherent flexibility within the platform will allow manufacturers to vary wheelbase, track width, overall height and seating position.



All ‘MQB’ products, however, will share components, manufacturing processes, and primarily the positioning of the engine, front axle and pedal box will be the same in all. The first to appear is likely to be the Audi A1, in 2010.The Volkswagen Group MQB platform is one of a range of automobile platforms of the Volkswagen Group. MQB stands for the German Modularer Querbaukasten, which can be loosely translated as “Modular Transverse Matrix= This component matrix is intended to allow Volkswagen Group to design a wide variety of transverse, front-engined, front-wheel drive models using the same set of components.



Cars based on MQB are expected to range from superminis to large family cars, replacing the current generations of models such as the Škoda Fabia or Volkswagen Passat. MQB will hence supersede the current PQ25, PQ35 and PQ46 platforms. The first model to use MQB is the second-generation Volkswagen Sharan, launched in March 2010



All Volkswagen Group MQB platform cars will share the same engine, front axle and pedal box positioning, but the platform will be flexible enough to allow individual models to have a variety of wheelbase, track and external dimensions.

Next in the scale is a new platform for mid-engined sports cars which the VW Group is currently developing. The internal codename for this project has been kept a secret, but Autocar understands that the project is borne out of the desire to be able to make cars as distantly separated as the Porsche Boxster and Lamborghini Gallardo more easily and more profitably.



According to our information, the next Porsche Boxster and Cayman will use this new model architecture, as will a smaller mid-engined sibling for the Audi R8, called the R4.



If it’s sufficiently adaptable, the new mid-engined platform could also be farmed out to both Lamborghini and Bugatti. Watch this space to read more on the project.



Top of the pile: ‘MLB’



The VW Group’s largest new platform will allow it to develop the next Audi A6, the new VW Phaeton, the next Bentley Continental GT and anything in between. It allows engines to be positioned longitudinally in the engine bay, and for power to be channelled to all four wheels, and is already serving under the new Audi A4 and A5.



New platforms, new models



As well as fathering replacements for the models we already know, these four model architectures will streamline development processes, and make it easier and cheaper for VW to bring all-new models to the road.



The means we’re going to see even more niche models from the group that recently gave us the VW Tiguan and Audi R8. We’re already expecting more offroaders and a premium supermini from Audi, a compact coupe from Seat, and both a small 4×4 and a large crossover from Skoda in the coming years. It seems those models are only the tip of the iceberg.
